Shop Drawings

Happy Sunday, Pam and Peter!

This week's installment of WMW includes the shop drawings.

Shop drawings are carefully created from the architectural interior drawings provided by Renée. Once the interior framing was completed by Dan and his crew, I spent some time up at the house capturing and detailing all of the 'actual' measurements. I then translate the architectural designs and adjust them to fit the site conditions. Once that is complete, the drawings get broken down into plan, elevation and section views that show the actual component measurements for building out the cabinets/millwork.

This phase is not speedy, nor should it be. A lot of time, thought and attention goes into shop drawings because this is where all of the layout and finer details come together. The drawing process helps me see what, if any, challenges or concerns will show up at installation time. Often I will have to go back to the architect and/or contractor to work through any items I see need adjustments. We work through those modifications and then update the drawings.

Once these are approved, as Renée has signed off, then I can proceed with final dimensioning of parts and assembly/fabrication. It basically gives me the 'green light'.

Thorough and well detailed shop drawings help to better ensure a successful project from start to finish. I never shortcut this step. It's a lot easier (and cheaper) to fix a mistake on paper than in real-time.

Renée, Dan and now you all have a copy of these in hand. It's my job to bring what's on paper into reality.

I have to say that the architectural design of your home as well as the execution of it's construction has been stellar. This is truly a gift for my part in the project and helps me to be successful.

Cheers to that!!!

Next up: cabinet box finish and assembly and drawer joinery... Let the fun officially begin!!! Truth... the fun began some time ago...

Thanks for reading!

Marc

Marc,

Once again, thank you for sharing your process and that you are having fun! That is great to hear! We are aware of what a fantastic group of people are working on the cabin. We hear it loud and clear in our conversations; we see it in the work (when we are lucky enough to get out to the mountains); it is evident in the level of detail and precision given to all aspects of the design and execution of them! How lucky are we?

best,

Pam
