Legacy and Wood Movement

Writer: marc-huntermarc-hunter

I'll explain.

As I've been making the floating shelves recently, I've spent lots of time sanding (aka my philosophical thinking sessions).

So, here it goes.

In the practice of creating works from solid wood, the realities of wood movement are a constant. Wood moves, it lives and breathes long after it's roots are removed. When we select plain-sawn lumber, not only does it reveal the beauty inherent in the growth and layers of the tree, but it also allows for the greatest changes in the structure of each board. This is in comparison to quarter-sawn or rift-sawn lumber, which are much more stable, but not always as interesting to the eye.

The movement primarily occurs tangentially along it's growth rings. Climates change from humid to arid and back again throughout the seasons and we have to account for this in the design of solid wood pieces. I won't get into the specifics of this now, but I'm happy to nerd out anytime.

By respecting and allowing for this movement to happen in design, I think it's important to create work that will stand the test of time. We sometimes refer to this as heirloom or, maybe more appropriately, as leaving a legacy.

I will assume that your new cabin is part of your legacy, something enjoyed now and for future generations of your family. You are investing in design/materials/craftsmanship and utilities that will last lifetimes. It's one of the greatest gifts to those you care about, a statement that you were here.

I often wonder what kind of world my daughters will inherit one day. I feel they have learned to care about others as well as understand the impact of their own actions. If even on a small scale, this will make a difference. Truth, integrity and authenticity should always win. This is where creativity is sourced and if we allow all of the components to function as intended, we can do work we are proud of and pass along our own legacies, all while allowing the 'wood' to move with time.

Yes, ok, possibly I've been sanding too much... :)

Well, the island, vanities and bedroom base cabinets are installed, shelves are being made and there is great progress in the house. Next up, completing the shelves and starting fabrication of the main bedroom pocket door. Exciting!

Til next time, be well.

Cheers!
